The Cancer Society of the Bahamas, a registered non-profit orgnization, was established in The Commonwealth of The Bahamas in 1976. Its aims are to educate the public about Cancer so that it may be prevented or diagnosed and treated in its early stages, to be of service to cancer patients, and to raise funds to support these programmes.
Cancer Society members function solely on a volunteer basis in the areas of education, health care, counselling and fundraising.
The Society meets regularly in Nassau at 5:30pm on the second Tuesday of each month at its Central Headquarters and Resource Center on East Terrace, Centerville, which it acquired in 1990. The Support Group, established in 1986 also meets at 5:30pm each third Wednesday of every month. This is an extrememly important part of the Society as it provides emotional psychological and moral support to patients and their families on a one-to-on basis or in a group setting. Advice on all aspects of canceras well as coping skills are shared and discussed in a caring environment.
The Society is funded solely by the public donations which are raised through the major appeal Love Lights a Tree, the Annual Raffle, Cancer Ball, Stride for Life and also by special fundraising events, private donations and memorial gifts.
