Love Lights A Tree
This anticipated event is hosted in late November around Thanksgiving and continues into the Christmas Season. A spectacular event that demonstrates joy and laughter; with caroling, dancing, drama and the lighting of the tree which gives persons the opportunity to remember their loved ones.
Love Lights A Tree Fundraising Event began in April of 1980 as a novel idea of Mr. Francis Christie and Mrs. Susan Roberts, after attending an American Cancer Society International Conference on Fundraising in Atlanta, Georgia; “How to Fund Raise and its Efforts”. Returning from the conference, they both knew that presenting this idea to the Board and the plans to execute this vision would be a mammoth task.
Nine years later on December 1st, 1989, the launch of “Love Lights A Tree” Event became a reality. A 40ft Olympia Christmas Tree was erected near the intersection of Robinson and Marathon Roads, this proved to be a heartwarming experience, thanks to the great responses from the general public and the community at large.
Now, an annual family oriented event, the tree continues to illuminate the evening skies during the Yuletide Season on the grounds of the Mall at Marathon. Each light is a representation of a person who has lost the fight, a person who is battling, or a person who has survived cancer.
Every year over twelve thousand letters are mailed throughout The Bahamas. Persons making a minimum donation of $10 will get to see their name and the name(s) of their loved ones on the ‘Love Stand’ Board which is displayed inside the Mall at Marathon throughout the holiday season, ‘In Memory Of, In Honor Of or Just Because’…….
Donations received over the years have allowed the Cancer Society of The Bahamas to continue educating the public about the various cancers and early detection. www.cancersocietybahamas.org/donate
