National Cancer Awareness Month
The Cancer Society is observing December as National Cancer Awareness Month, focusing on informing Bahamians and residents on how to prevent or reduce their risk of developing cancer, a disease that is conquerable with early detection and healthy lifestyle choices.
According to the Mayo Clinic, here are steps to prevent cancer or reduce your risk:
- Get screened: Regular self-exams and routine screenings for cancers can increase your chances of finding cancer early, which is vital to successful cancer treatment.
- Avoid tobacco use: Multiple studies have linked tobacco use to various types of cancer, including, but not limited to, lung cancer, mouth cancer, kidney cancer, pancreatic cancer, esophageal cancer, and bladder cancer.
- Exercise regularly: Regular exercise can help you reduce excess body weight, which studies have shown to increase the production and circulation of estrogen and insulin, hormones that promote cancer growth.
- Consume a healthy, balanced diet: With a diet rich in lean protein, fruits, and vegetables, you can reduce your risk for developing many types of cancer, up to 50% of which are linked to poor diet.
- Wear sunscreen: Sunscreen reduces the risk of developing skin cancer, one of the most common types of cancer worldwide, by minimizing UV damage.
- Get vaccinated: By getting vaccinated, you can protect yourself against viral infections that cause cancer, such as human papillomavirus (HPV), a prevalent sexually transmitted virus that causes cervical cancer. An HPV vaccine protects against 90% of cancers caused by HPV.

Congratulations you all for a job well done on the first ever Virtual Ball. The event was a mammoth task to execute, but the results were phenomenal.
Who would have thought a virtual ball would have reached so many sponsors that unselfishly supported the mission and vision of the Cancer Society of The Bahamas financially during this critical time of the Corona Virus pandemic.
Thank you Lovern Wildgoose and Nicole Leary-Imhoff, as well as your Committee, as you all have proven that your time and talents are priceless. This year’s event has set the standard and provided a blueprint for next year’s event to be even bigger and better.
Of course we could never repay you for all that you do for the Cancer Society of The Bahamas, but if the world becomes a better place tomorrow, it will happen because of volunteers like you.
